MIXED MEDIA ANIMATION

What is Mixed Media Animation?

Mixed media animation, sometimes called hybrid animation, is when different techniques – such as flat art, still photography, 3d imaging, stop-motion, or live action – are combined in a compositing program to create something new.

Illustration of hands using a keyboard and mouse at a desk, with a computer screen displaying a digital scene—a person stands in a virtual environment with floating icons, blending elements of mixed media animation for a dynamic visual effect.

Our History With Mixed Media

Our history with mixed media goes back to even before the founding of the studio. Creative Director William Gadea’s short film It’s About My Brother was an official selection of the prestigious Annecy Film Festival in 2003. Since our founding in 2012, mixed media has been a
staple of our work.

Two cartoonish, gray-skinned people with exaggerated expressions sit in a yellow car at night; the woman looks worried while the man, in glasses and a green suit, smiles as he drives. Conical trees and a purple sky evoke a mixed media animation feel.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Because it is a combination of different techniques, well-conceived mixed media animation can look amazingly fresh and out-of-the-ordinary.

You create the imagery that will be combined in the usual manner. If you are taking photos or video, you might need to isolate your subject using a green screen. Then you join the layers together in a compositing program – After Effects is the one that is most popular.
